Diane K. Staab, age 62, was killed on Monday, Jan. 13, in a head-on crash on Ball Pond Road in New Fairfield, Connecticut, according to Connecticut State Police.
Following her sudden death, Staab’s two Rottweilers, Saffron Star and Grace Bee, and a smaller Pomeranian are being cared for by friends on a temporary basis, but they need a permanent home, Hudson Valley Rottie Rescue announced in a social media post on Thursday, Jan. 16.
Saffron Star, age 8, and Grace Bee, age 4, are bonded and are described as active, affectionate, and comfortable with people and other dogs. The third dog, a Pomeranian, could potentially be adopted separately. Staab’s dogs were well-loved and lived in a home with a large fenced yard, where they had the freedom to roam and use a dog door. They also enjoyed regular walks at a local park and swimming, according to the rescue organization.
The two Rottweilers are spayed, but their vaccine status is not confirmed. Hudson Valley Rottie Rescue described Saffron Star as more reserved and Grace Bee as friendly and playful. Both dogs are known to enjoy snuggling on the couch once they are comfortable with someone.
Staab’s friends have been taking turns caring for the dogs in the days following her death, but they are hoping to find a permanent family that can provide the love and stability the dogs need after this devastating loss, the rescue said.
Hudson Valley Rottie Rescue is handling the adoption process and requires interested adopters to complete an application, provide references, and undergo a home visit. Those interested in adopting any of the dogs can reach out by messaging the rescue or emailing rottnrescues@aol.com.
According to police, the crash that killed Staab is still under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Trooper Nicolas Brunsden at 203-312-5701 or via email at Nicolas.Brunsden@ct.gov.
